Men's Glasses Frames: How to Read the Numbers on Your Current Pair
There is a decent chance the most useful piece of shopping information you own is currently folded up next to your keyboard.

Somewhere on the pair of glasses you already wear, a manufacturer stamped a short string of numbers. Something like 54□18-145. It is not a serial number and it is not decoration. It is a dimensional description of that frame, written in a standardized system, and if you can read it you can shop for men's glasses frames online with something much better than a guess.
Most size guides stop at "these numbers mean lens width, bridge and temple length" and move on. That is true, and it is also about a third of what the marking actually gives you. What follows is the rest.
Finding the marking
The stamp lives in one of four places, roughly in order of likelihood.
Inside the left temple arm
This is the default. Unfold the arm, turn the glasses so the inner face of the left arm points toward you, and look at the section between the hinge and about a third of the way down. On metal frames it is usually laser-etched and very faint.
Inside the right temple arm
Some manufacturers split the information: dimensions on one side, brand and model on the other. If the left arm only gives you a name, check the right.
On the bridge, behind the nose pads
Common on wire and titanium frames where the arms are too thin to carry text. You will need to tilt the frame toward a light source and look at the flat back surface of the bridge.
Molded into the acetate
On thicker acetate frames the numbers are sometimes pressed into the arm rather than printed on it. Same color as the frame, no contrast, and after two years of skin contact they can be nearly invisible. Hold the arm at a shallow angle to a lamp so the light rakes across the surface — the raised or recessed edges will throw a shadow and the digits will appear.
If your eyes are the reason you own glasses in the first place, this is a fair moment to point out the obvious: take a photo with your phone and zoom in. That works better than squinting.
What the string actually says
Take 54□18-145.
54 — the eye size. The horizontal width of one lens opening, in millimeters. Not the widest point of the lens, and not the visible glass. It is the width of the smallest rectangle that would enclose the lens shape, measured in what the industry calls the boxing system. On a rounded frame, that box is slightly wider than the lens looks.
□ — the boxing symbol. This little square is doing real work. It tells you the two numbers on either side of it were taken using the boxing system rather than an older method. When you see it, you know a 54 from one brand and a 54 from another are describing the same thing. Frames marked with a hyphen instead of a square are usually still boxing-system measurements, but the square is the explicit signal.
18 — the bridge, or DBL. The distance between the two lens openings at their closest point. This is the number that decides whether the frame sits on your nose or slides down it, and it is the one most people never think about.
145 — the temple length. Measured along the arm from the hinge screw to the tip, following the bend rather than in a straight line.

Outside those ranges is not wrong. It just means the frame is doing something specific, and you should know what.
The number that isn't printed
Here is where most guides stop and most fit failures begin.
The single measurement that determines whether a frame looks right on a wider face is total frame width — hinge to hinge across the front of the frame. It is almost never stamped anywhere.
You can approximate it from what is stamped:
54 × 2 + 18 = 126 mm
But 126 mm is not the frame's width. The endpieces — the small flared sections that carry the hinges — sit outside the lens openings and add material on both sides. Depending on construction, that adds somewhere in the range of 8 to 18 mm in total. So a frame marked 54□18 might actually measure 134 mm across, or 144 mm, and those two frames will look and feel completely different on the same face.
This matters more for men's glasses frames than for anything else in eyewear, because men's faces are on average wider at the temples and the frame runs closer to the edge of the face. A few millimeters of endpiece is the difference between arms that run straight back and arms that visibly bow outward.
To measure it yourself
Lay the frame face-down on a table, fully open. Put a ruler across the widest points of the front, hinge to hinge, and read the number. That is your target. When you shop, look for a published total frame width within roughly 4 mm of it.
To measure your face instead
Hold a ruler flat and horizontal against your face at the height where the arms would rest, and read the distance from the outer edge of one temple to the other. Your frame width should land at or very slightly under that number.
Reading everything else on the arm
The dimensions are usually not alone. The rest of the stamp is worth thirty seconds.
A model code. Something like OG10727 or a short word. This is how you reorder the identical frame, and how a store looks it up. Names are easier to keep hold of than codes, which is why some brands use them — asking for "the Broderick" is a very different phone call from reading out fourteen characters.
A color code. Usually C1, C2, C3 or a two-digit number appended to the model. The same frame often exists in four finishes and the dimensions are identical across all of them, which is genuinely useful: if you know a model fits, you can change the color without re-checking anything.
A material stamp. TITANIUM, TR-90, MONEL, SS for stainless steel. On mixed-material frames this refers to whichever component the stamp sits on, so a TITANIUM mark on the temple does not guarantee a titanium front.
Country of origin and standards marks. CE, sometimes a country name. These tell you nothing about fit and can be safely ignored for shopping purposes.
The numbers move as a set
This is the part that turns a decoded stamp into a shopping tool, and it is the piece almost nobody explains.
Eye size and bridge are not independent. Together they determine where each lens sits relative to your pupils, and how far apart the frame spreads across the top of your nose. If you increase one and hold the other constant, you have changed the frame's fit in two ways at once.

If 52□20 fits you well and you fall for a frame available only in a 54 eye size, you do not want 54□20. You want 54□18. The sum stays near 72, the lenses stay centered where your eyes are, and the total width barely moves.
That single substitution solves the most common online frustration with men's glasses frames — the one where someone buys a frame in "the same size" as their old pair, and it sits wrong for reasons they cannot articulate.

The rule has limits. It holds well within a 4 mm swing and starts to break down beyond that, because at some point the lens shape itself has changed enough that the geometry no longer maps. Treat it as a shortlist filter, not a law.
What the numbers cannot tell you
Being honest about the gaps is part of using the system properly. Four things the stamp will not reveal.

Nose pad type
Adjustable pads on metal arms behave completely differently from a molded acetate bridge, even at an identical marked bridge width. Adjustable pads give you a few millimeters of tuning after purchase; a molded bridge gives you exactly what is printed. If your current pair has adjustable pads and you have been quietly bending them inward for years, your effective bridge is narrower than the number says.

Lens height
The vertical dimension is rarely marked. It matters if you have a shorter distance from brow to cheekbone, or if you wear a frame low.

Base curve and wrap
How much the frame front curves around the face. Two frames with identical width numbers can sit very differently on a face with prominent cheekbones.

Weight
A 54□18 acetate frame and a 54□18 titanium frame can differ substantially in mass, and on a larger men's frame that difference is felt across a full day rather than in the first five minutes.
None of this makes the numbers less valuable. It just means they narrow the field from hundreds of frames to a handful, and the last step is still visual.
When there is no marking at all
Three situations where you will come up empty, and what to do in each.
Rimless frames. The arms are often too slim to carry text, and there is no rim to stamp. Measure directly: ruler across the front for total width, ruler across one lens at its widest horizontal point for an approximate eye size, and ruler across the gap between the lenses for the bridge.
Worn-off acetate. Skin oil and cleaning cloths erase surface printing over a few years. Try the raking-light trick first; if the numbers were printed rather than molded, they are gone for good and you measure instead.
Older or non-standard frames. Some vintage frames use marking conventions that predate the boxing system, and a small number of older American frames were marked in inches. If a number looks implausible — a bridge marked 5, for instance — you are probably looking at a different system, and direct measurement is the faster path.
Measuring by hand takes about ninety seconds and gets you within a millimeter, which is close enough for every decision you are about to make.
Putting it to work
Once you have the numbers, the actual shopping process is short.
- Write down four figures: eye size, bridge, temple length, and total frame width measured with a ruler.
- Filter for total frame width within about 4 mm of yours. This is the hard constraint.
- Within that set, use the eye-size-plus-bridge sum to allow yourself variety — a wider lens with a narrower bridge is a genuinely different look at the same fit.
- Treat temple length as a soft constraint. Most arms have some adjustment at the bend, and a 145 will usually work where a 150 is marked.
- Only then look at shape, material and color.
Doing it in that order is the whole point. Shape-first shopping is why people end up with three pairs in a drawer that look good in photographs and slide down their nose in practice.

The short version
- The marking is usually inside the left temple arm; check the bridge on wire frames, and use raking light on acetate.
54□18-145is eye size, bridge, temple length. The square is the boxing-system symbol, not a stylistic choice.- Total frame width is the number that decides fit on a wider face, and it is almost never printed. Measure it with a ruler across the front.
- Eye size plus bridge stays roughly constant for a given face. Use that to substitute sizes intelligently instead of matching one number and hoping.
- The stamp will not tell you about nose pads, lens height, wrap or weight. Those are the visual checks.
